SUMMARY:Yajur Upākarmā: Thursday\, August 27 & Gāyatrī Japam: Friday\, August 28
DESCRIPTION:Yajur Upākarmā: Thursday\, August 27\, 2026 \nGāyatrī Japam: Friday\, August 28\, 2026 \n\nYajur Upākarmā will be observed on Thursday\, August 27\, 2026\, followed by\nGāyatrī Japam on Friday\, August 28. \nA lunar eclipse will occur during the late evening or night of August 27\nand will be visible in parts of Europe\, the Middle East\, Asia\, Africa\, and\nNorth and South America. \n\nQuestions Addressed\n\nDoes the lunar eclipse affect Yajur Upākarmā performed that morning?\nDoes it affect those performing śrāddham later that afternoon?\n\n\nThe guidance below is based on the rules stated in the\nĀhnika Grantham authored by His Holiness Śrīmad Villivalam\nAzhagiyasingar\, the 45th Jeer of Śrī Ahobila Maṭham. Two Śrī Sannidhi\nārādhakars were also consulted. \n\n1. Second and Subsequent Yajur Upākarmā\nThe second and all subsequent Yajur Upākarmā observances must be performed\non the Paurṇamī tithi of the month of Śrāvaṇa. \nThe date is not affected by doṣas or ritual blemishes associated with: \n\nSaṅkramaṇam\nGrahaṇam\nMala māsa\nOther similar conditions\n\nUnlike śrāddham\, eating or partaking of Perumāḷ prasādam is not an integral\npart of the Upākarmā ritual. \nHowever\, the rules associated with the lunar eclipse require fasting for\napproximately three yāmas\, or nine hours\, before the eclipse begins.\n\n\nEastern Time\n1:33 PM ET\nAvoid eating after approximately this time. \n\n\nPacific Time\n10:33 AM PT\nAvoid eating after approximately this time. \n\n\nMost people complete Upākarmā during the morning. Temple batches generally\nrun from sunrise until mid-morning\, allowing sufficient time to complete\nthe observance and eat before the eclipse-related fasting period begins. \n\nConclusion\n\nYajur Upākarmā must be observed on Thursday\, August 27\, 2026.\n\nParticipants should complete the observance and eat before the\neclipse-related fasting restriction begins. \n\n\n2. Prathama Yajur Upākarmā\nThe above rule does not automatically apply to brahmacārīs observing their\nfirst Upākarmā after upanayanam. \nThe first Upākarmā performed after upanayanam is known as\nPrathama Upākarmā. \nFor Prathama Upākarmā\, the selected Paurṇamī must be free from ritual\nblemishes and must fall in one of the following months: \n\nĀṣāḍha\nŚrāvaṇa\nProṣṭhapada\n\nPrathama Upākarmā should not be observed on a Paurṇamī affected by: \n\nSaṅkramaṇam\nGrahaṇam\nGuru or Śukra mauḍhyam\nMala māsa\n\n\nFamilies arranging a youngster’s first Upākarmā should consult their\nelders or family vādhyār before fixing the date. \n\nPrathama Gāyatrī Japam\n\nPrathama Gāyatrī Japam is free from these blemishes and should be\nperformed on Friday\, August 28\, 2026.\n \n\n3. Śrāvaṇa Paurṇamī Śrāddham\nŚrāddham is normally performed during the early or mid-afternoon period\nknown as aparāhna kālam. \nUnlike Upākarmā\, the following are directly connected with the śrāddham\nritual: \n\nBhojanam for the bhoktā\nPartaking of pitṛ-śeṣam by the kartā\nPartaking of pitṛ-śeṣam by the kartā’s family\n\nBecause the lunar eclipse occurs on the same day and the fasting restriction\naffects the required bhojanam\, the Śrāvaṇa Paurṇamī śrāddham should be\npostponed to the following day. \nGrahaṇa tarpaṇam must be performed on the eclipse tithi itself. The\nśrāddham belonging to that tithi must be performed on the following day\,\neven when the following day has a different tithi. \nThose required to perform Śrāvaṇa Paurṇamī śrāddham should consult their\nelders or family vādhyār regarding the proper observance. \n\nSummary\n\n\nRegular Yajur Upākarmā\nObserve on Thursday\, August 27\, 2026. Complete the\nobservance and eat before the eclipse fasting restriction begins. \n\n\nPrathama Upākarmā\nConsult the family vādhyār or knowledgeable elders before fixing the\ndate. \n\n\nGāyatrī Japam\nPerform on Friday\, August 28\, 2026. \n\n\nŚrāddham\nPerform grahaṇa tarpaṇam on the eclipse tithi and the corresponding\nśrāddham on the following day\, after consulting the family vādhyār. \n\n\n\nQuestions or Clarifications\nContact Sri Ahobila Muth Inc. at\n\nsriahobilamuthinc@gmail.com\n \n\n\nŚrīmate Śrī Lakṣmīnṛsiṃha Divya Pādukā Sevaka Śrīvaṇ Śaṭhakopa\nŚrī Nārāyaṇa Yatīndra Mahādeśikāya Namaḥ \nŚrīmate Śrīvaṇ Śaṭhakopa Śrī Raṅganātha Yatīndra\nMahādeśikāya Namaḥ
